Here is a truth: we are not all meant for the big and wonderful things that we once conceived.

It is the most sobering and the most devastating; a realisation which we surely all have at some point. To some, it flickers momentarily, hinted at in drunken afterthought, but never formulated as something conscious and cohesive; an eternal chinese whisper that breathes softly into the black. When I learnt of it, barely two whole weeks ago, it was like smashing a metal compass through my skull.

Well Floyd was surging through the whitened cords as the title track wrenched itself forth, started things up again. Things had started up again too many times. You’re not quite a Barrett, I thought with a sip and a sigh, but you’ve been gone for a while now. You’re an old soul. And I hope that you’re well there, I hope that you’re ok. I’m doing well here, strictly speaking, I’m alright.

This place is pretty busy, busier than usual for a Tuesday. The coffee is decent, and it seems that everyone is doing pretty well. Yeah, we’re all well here.

It’s cold in Sydney; it’s cold all right. It’s like a blizzard, but what can you expect post-Armageddon? The walls in this place are tired, a thickened canvas of crusty whitewashed paint. It’s past eleven there, past eleven o’clock in London. I hope you’re well there. Yeah, I hope you’ve got a carefully rolled joint and a chest so heavy that it hurts to press repeat, but you do, because you're listening too.

SOME NOTES ON CURING SADNESS

Feelings:

It was thick breath.

It was heavy skull.

Actions:

It involved leaving the house, locking the door and walking to the local bus stop, through the mist of golden wattle.

It involved pausing at the melaleuca tree to slowly strip off some papery bark, and feel it crumble beneath dry fingers.

It involved sitting on a bus until it I was removed, in a geographical sense at least, from everything I had ever seen.

Post Script:

I will tell any children I may one day have the following fact: that running away is always the most effective solution.
